Though Emma Lazarus’ name likely isn’t the first to come to mind when asked to name a poet, nonetheless, her poem “The New Colossus,” engraved into the pedestal upon which stands Lady Liberty, merits Ms. Lazarus special recognition.
In particular, this Fourth of July weekend, her words, “yearning to breathe free,” resonate most especially, I suspect, as we collectively breathe a humongous sigh of gratitude and relief that we were able to celebrate our Nation’s independence freely, without terrorist incident.
Thank God for all those throughout our 239 years who have sacrificed to keep us free, and especially those who are vigilant to protect all our God-given freedoms today.
